10th November 2011

Hi all,

Welcome to your November Great Gardening Newsletter! Hopefully you have been enjoying fine spells and are making the most of the time in the garden. The vege garden is filling up now and the new growth is incredible. We have been picking fresh Asparagus and lettuce, but the Pak Choy went straight to seed so it's now in the compost heap. This weekends focus was the rose garden, with a quick weed and some new plants added for colour. With the first of the roses breaking into flower, you can see why they say there's nothing better than a rose. The dahlias I planted behind the roses are all up despite the fact that the snails have been trying to devour them, so add some snail bait and start foliar feeding to keep the plants looking fresh and growing well.

It's a great time to buy new roses as they're coming into flower so you can be sure you get the colour you want. We have a great deal on the standard roses this weekend. Normally $39.99 but at the moment they are two for just $60 (special ends Wednesday the 16th November)

In Your Vegetable Garden
  • It's a great time to start liquid feeding your Tomatoes, to ensure continued growth, flower and fruit production. Kings Tomato food is formulated to provide all the nutrients required to produce sweet juicy tomatoes and a healthy plant
  • Plant another crop of potatoes now to have a continued supply into the new year. I planted some well sprouted seed potatoes about a week ago and they are through and ready for mounding. Remember it's three months from planting to harvest. To read more Click Here
  • Plant fresh herbs now and be prepared for those summer Barbeques. If you're limited for space plant them up in containers with Kings Container Mix. Don't be without some of the old favourites like Parsley, Sage, Basil and Thyme.
  • Don't miss the opportunity to get in those Kumara plants. We still have some instore and ready to plant today. Ask at the checkout for a growing guide.
  • If you want a head start on growing your Capsicums and Chilli then we have the solution for you. Our range of large grade plants, some with fruit are ready to plant up today. Included in this range are also the Grafted Egg plants.

In Your Flower Garden

  • Alstromerias have to be of the best additions to any flower garden. The compact form, Princess Lilies are prolific flowerers and ideal for patio pots or garden borders. Known for their rich colours and lasting ability as a cut flower, these are a great addition to any flower garden.
  • Fuchsias are a shade lover that will flower for months. We have a wide selection of new and collectable varieties, as well as the old time favourites. From rich reds, pinks, whites and so many more.
  • Coming instore soon are the Hippeastrum bulbs, also known as Amarylis. Large trumpet blooms make a dramatic statement. Plant in a container and bring  inside when they are in flower. Whether it's a dramatic red or pure white they really are a special treat or gift.

In Your Garden

  • Christmas is coming round quickly and next week will see the first of the living Christmas trees arriving instore. One of the first to arrive will be Pinus Joseph's Star. These are a compact form and have been hand clipped to encourage tight growth. Get in early as numbers are limited.
  • All of our roses are coming into bloom now and there's never been a better time to plant. If your looking for a specific colour, now's the time to buy them and our standard range is on special, normally $39.99 now until Wednesday 16th they are 2 for just $60.
  • If your looking for a touch of colour for a shady position in the garden then why not consider Clivia 'Peach Shades'. Pale peach blooms smother dark green strappy foliage. Mass plant to create a stunning effect.
  • Flowering in the garden at the moment are the Chinese Star Jasmine. Masses of starry white, fragrant flowers smother this versatile climber. If you don't have space for a climber these grow equally as well as a groundcover, simply pin down the stems and they will form a thick leafy cover.

In Your Garden Shed

  • A favourite of mine in the shed is the Aquaticus products. Supernatural, an organic fish and seaweed based fertiliser, also will help to repel against insects and fungus diseases. Use as a foliar feed or as a soil drench and watch the results. Glow is a spraying oil. Combine with Supernatural for maximum effect and prevention. Garden nourishment from the sea.
  • Nature's Way Fruit and Vegie Gun is a great ready to use Pyrethrum based spray to keep at hand. It can be used to control caterpillars, aphids, whitefly, thrips and many more. Low toxicity for you and your garden.
  • If you've seen the white butterflies in the garden then grab some McGregors Derris Dust and protect your veges today. An Organic solution and easy to use, just remember you will have to reapply after heavy rain.
