A New Garden

Starting a new garden from scratch is an important part of making your new house feel like a home.To get started you will need to go through a few steps so you get it right the first time.

1. Planning

2. Preparation

3. Planting the right plants

4. Upkeep and maintenance

5. Exciting projects e.g: Water gardening or Water features

SOIL PREPARATION IS THE KEY!

All soils need a good turning over a couple of times before planting. Mixing in organic matter such as Kings Organic Compost will give the soil good texture and help lift nutrient levels. If you have a heavy soil you could use a product called Gypsum to help improve the quality of your soil. Apply Gypsum every six months to the top of your soil and water in well, not only will these products make your soil healthy but will help your plants to establish faster, thus improving plant vigor.

PLANNING:

Where your garden beds will go is very important. Think about space needed for childrens play areas, paths, clothesline etc. Once you have a good idea of where these will go it’s best to draw a plan placing these items on, highlighting any existing plants that you are keeping and plotting where the house and living areas are. Bring this plan into the garden centre and our staff can help you design where your garden beds will go. Keep in mind sun and shade areas and what your view will be from windows etc. Let our staff help write you a list of plants required and then you can shop at your leisure when you have your beds ready to plant. Always plant with Kings 24 Plus a slow release granular fertiliser which aides in the establishing of roots on your new plants. Before selecting plants always read the label. It will tell you height and width and sun or shade requirements. These are important to keep in mind as a shade loving plant will not do well in full sun.

Our staff are here to help with good product knowledge on these matters.

If you want your garden to have interest all year round remember to shop at different times of the year. As not all plants are available all year round.

SPRING IS THE TIME TO BUY:

Lavender, Gardenia, Taro, Citrus, Summer Flowering shrubs, flowering annuals, vegetable punnets and seed potatoes.

SUMMER IS THE TIME TO BUY:

Hibiscus, Succulents and Cacti, Daylilies, Tropical Impatiens, Canna and Palms.

AUTUMN IS THE TIME TO BUY:

Remember to care for your garden once planted. Water well in the warmer months and stake any plant over 1m tall. Installing an irrigation system and using a water timer will not only save you time but save you money. Our staff can help you - It really is easy.

Use Kings General Garden Fertiliser in Spring/Summer for improved plant health, as the stronger your plants are, the more resistance they will have to fight bugs and diseases. If you do see any damage don’t hesitate to bring in a sample and our knowledgable staff will identify the problem and provide a cure.

Using Living Earth More than Mulch as a thin layer of top mulch in the summer time, will help conserve moisture and reduce the amount of water needed in the summer. Mulch will also suppress weeds - plus it looks great too.
